The Future of Google Ads: The Top 3 Changes Every Business Owner Should Know About

Google Ads has become an indispensable part of most digital marketing campaigns, helping businesses of all sizes attract potential customers through targeted ads in real-time. However, changes in how people search, the rise of artificial intelligence, and the growing privacy concerns of internet users mean that Google Ads is always changing.

Staying on top of these changes is important to ensure your business is attracting qualified leads in the new search environment. In this blog, we’ll review the current state of Google Ads, what trends we expect to see, and what it all means for your business.

How AI is Transforming the Way We Use Google Ads

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly changing how we do business, and digital marketing is no exception. When harnessed correctly, AI can make it faster and easier to target the right audience at the right time. As Virginia Rometty, the former CEO of IBM once said, “The key to success with AI is not just having the right data, but also asking the right questions.”

Much of the decision-making related to what budget should be set, what keywords should be chosen, and how each ad should be phrased can now be done more efficiently with AI. Here are just a few of the ways AI has already transformed how we use Google Ads:

Smarter Targeting

By analyzing search intent, browsing behaviour, demographic data and more, AI helps ensure your ads are shown to your target audience at the ideal time.

Automated Bidding

Gone are the days of having to set bids manually. Google Ad’s Smart Bidding feature uses AI to predict the likelihood of a click leading to a conversion and automatically adjusts bids to get the best results for your chosen budget.

Responsive Ads

You can now get ads that perform better without constant manual A/B testing. AI does the heavy lifting of combining different headlines, images, videos, and descriptions that you input to find the version that will succeed.

Performance Max Campaigns and AI Max

These fully AI-driven campaigns use information you input to run optimized ads across the entire Google ecosystem, including YouTube, Gmail, Display, Maps, and Discover. This feature interprets user intent and matches ads accordingly instead of relying on exact keyword matches. AI Max refers to the increasing integration of AI into Google Ads, including ad copy suggestions, bidding strategies, and the AI-generated images and headlines.

The Future of Google Ads: 3 Trends and Potential Challenges to Watch Out For

Google Ads is rapidly transforming, meaning this information will likely be outdated within weeks. However, we’ve identified three major areas to pay attention to as you develop your ad strategy.

#1 Search Intent Matters More Than Exact Keywords

SEO optimization has become synonymous with “keywords” over the past several years, but Google now tries to guess what people mean, not just what they type (intent-based matching). This means it is more important to understand why someone is searching for something. There are three categories of search intent:

  • Transactional: This type of search intent refers to someone researching before buying a product or service or being ready to convert. Ex. “Best garden store near me”
  • Informational: A search in which the user is trying to learn something that is not necessarily related to making a purchase. Ex. “How to compost”
  • Navigational: In this search type, a user is looking for a specific website or brand. Ex. “Slip Tube greenhouses”

What it means for your business

AI Max uses your landing pages, ads, and keyword lists to figure out what you are selling and to decide when it’s relevant to show your ad to someone across multiple platforms. This means that accurate and high-quality on-page content that addresses real user pain points is critical for good ad performance.

Consider the intent category of your potential customers and adjust your landing page content accordingly. For example, how-to guides and explainer videos will be more relevant for informational intent, while product landing pages, comparison posts, and reviews are more relevant for transactional intent.

#2 Conversion Tracking is About to Get More Difficult in Canada

In response to growing privacy concerns among internet users, web browsers are gradually phasing out third-party cookies. This makes it harder to track users across different websites, attribute ad clicks to conversions that happen later, and target ads. Safari and Firefox already block third-party cookies by default, and Google Chrome is phasing them out in 2025.

Canadian privacy laws, which have lagged behind many countries, are set to get much stricter. Bill C-27 is expected to give internet users greater control over their data by requiring businesses to exercise greater transparency about how data is collected and used, obtain explicit consent, and provide an option to opt out of tracking.

What it means for your business

As a business owner in Canada, these privacy laws may impact how you collect leads and measure results. In anticipation of changing laws, you may need to adjust how you collect, store, and use data. More awareness of privacy and opt-out options will result in Google Ads no longer benefiting from the full range of tracking data it currently uses.

Collect customer contact information, like email addresses, CRM data, and website behaviour directly (instead of through third parties) with consent. If you don’t have one already, you should implement a cookie banner that gives website visitors the ability to accept or decline tracking. Switch to Google Analytics 4 (GA4), which doesn’t rely on cookies in the same way as Universal Analytics.

#3 AI Search is Reducing Organic Traffic and Visibility of Paid Ads

Instead of searching on Google, many users are turning to chat-based answers through platforms like ChatGPT, Bing Chat, DeepSeek, and others, which is reducing the visibility of ads. Even within Google search, the Search Generative Experience (SGE), also known as AI Overviews, offers users concise summary answers to queries without users needing to click on individual links.

This means fewer users will scroll past these direct answers, reducing clicks on sponsored links and organic search results. After all, if you get a satisfactory answer to your search query right at the top, why look any further? SGE does integrate ads within the AI Overview, but the placement is less prominent, and users are less likely to click through.

What it means for your business

Paid ads may become the main way to get visibility as organic traffic declines, so you will likely face increased competition for top ad placements. It’s time to diversify beyond the focus on the traditional Search Engine Results Page. Do this by leveraging YouTube, Discovery, PMax, and Display. We recommend embracing first-party data, brand search, and email list retargeting.

Is Google Ads Still Relevant in 2025?

When it comes to getting the attention of your target audience online, Google Ads absolutely is and will continue to be a crucial part of any digital marketing campaign in the immediate future. The pace of change with how Google Ads works is unprecedented, and in many ways is leaving the traditional domain of marketing and morphing into an exercise in data science. As Google continually adjusts their model to match advances in AI and privacy policies, businesses must do the same.
